How much do extracurricular activities matter?
I am a junior in high school and have a strong work ethic for academics, but I am not athletically or musicially talented. I am in swimming and in orchestra, but I am not the best at those activities. Will it effect my chance to become successful in life?

Hi, I suppose is important to dedicate time to extracuriccular activities but not beeing the best at those activities it does not mean that you won't be successful in your life. What it is really important is to dedicate time to some extracurricular activities that you feel pasisonate about and try to do it along the years never giving up.

Couple of things:
- The fact that you are involved in swimming & orchestra is awesome. You do not necessarily need to be the "best" at it. The fact that you are involved, giving in your time and balancing other aspects of your life demonstrates to potential universities and future jobs that you are able to juggle multiple things.
- Extracurricular activities do not necessarily need to be athletic, musical or any sort of "artistic" qualities. You can get involved with your school by organizing bake sales, asking your teacher if you can get involved in extra "school" projects, join debate clubs, be part of the announcement club, etc. I am not sure exactly what types of clubs you have active but I do encourage you to ask your teacher or fellow students how they are getting involved.
Activities do matter. Imagine someone with a 90% and extracurricular activities and yourself with a bit less than that person. The former might get a higher preference.
That being said, do not put extra pressure on yourself. Find something you enjoy and dedicate time towards it. What employers and future universities look for is your dedication not AMOUNT of extra curriculars.
