By asking this question, you've already taken the first step to being more assertive. Also, there's nothing wrong with being shy, but if you want to be able to participate more in conversations, you can make that happen by listening closely to what others are saying and begin by asking them to tell you more. You can also ask questions about what they just said. People usually like being asked about their thoughts or feelings on whatever topic is being discussed.
Using positive reinforcement in conversations also makes people feel good about you. Let your friends know when you agree with something they said or if you think they made a really good point.
People will also appreciate you for being a good listener and not needing to be center stage in conversations.
Remember to enjoy all your activities and especially your friends.
With every good wish!

To stop being shy in front of your friends, start by gradually exposing yourself to social situations and hanging out with smaller groups. Focus on shared interests like swimming, reading books, playing video games, or watching movies to have natural conversation topics. Be an active listener, show interest in what your friends say, and ask follow-up questions. Take small steps outside your comfort zone by initiating conversations or suggesting activities. Remember to be kind to yourself, accept that it's okay to feel shy sometimes. With time and practice, you can become more comfortable and confident around your friends!
