Veterinarian, IT, or both?

I want to be a Veterinarian, but I'm also very interested in IT. Is there anyway I can combine the two? I've heard about Health Information Technology and Veterinary Technicians, but I don' t really know anything about them. Should I just focus on becoming a Vet and pursue IT later in life, minor in IT, or look more into Health IT ? #women-in-stem #stem #veterinary #veterinary-technician

Michael’s Answer

Which of the two is your passion? Never choose a career path for money nor pleasure (I.E. 'easy') - choose whichever you have a passion for. I'm a Mechanical Engineering who loves electronics. Not surprisingly, in engineering, I combine the two regularity in my profession as 'mechatronics'. Unfortunately, IT / Veterinarian are completely divergent career paths. It's okay to choose one as a career and choose the other as a hobby. When you picture yourself at work, are you working with animals and people, or working with computers, databases, and program installations?

Courtney’s Answer

You can get into IT with short certificate programs at junior colleges, but becoming a Vet takes 8-9 years of college. My first question would be what is your passion? Do you want to spend 8-9 years in college? Can you afford to spend, 8-9 years in college? The thing is, if you try to combine IT with Veterinary school you'll end up dragging your 8-9 years of vet school out even longer. Before deciding, I would recommending taking 1 IT class at your local junior college, and also do an internship at a Vet Clinic. After doing those two things you should have a better idea of what direction to go.

Courtney recommends the following next steps:

Find a Vet office to do an internship at.
Take an IT class at your local junior college.

Rachel Peridot’s Answer

I think there's definitely room to do both - there are tons of pet-focused websites and apps that could be a good start for combining your passions. For example, my vet uses the PetDesk App. I'd recommend looking into the different pet-care related apps that are out there, and check out their job boards to see what kind of skills they are looking for.

Rachel Peridot recommends the following next steps:

Research pet-care apps and look at the types of jobs they are hiring for / the required skills
