To become a psychologist, what kind of college major should keep in mind?

I am a 10th grader in high school and am hoping to get my associates degree by the time I graduate. I am wanting to attend a school that would really help me become a psychologist.

It might matter just a bit less what degree you get for a bachelor's, but you would want to take classes or get a degree that would help you get accepted to a higher program after that.

One place that offers masters' degrees in this field is The Townsend Institute (https://www.cui.edu/townsend). You could look around their website and see what kinds of things you can find out about what you might want to study in order to get accepted to a program there, if you were interested in maybe applying with them for grad school someday--or if you do some research like this, then you could have a better idea of what to look for when comparing programs.

Hello Claire! I hope you are doing well, the best major to take in order to become a psychologist is psychology in undergrad. But in order to become a psychologist you would then need to go to graduate school.

There are a lot of kinds of Psychology graduate programs as well that you will probably want to look into being so early in your education. There's traditional clinical psychology programs but there are also applied psychology graduate programs as well like Industrial-Organizational psychology and Human Factors (Engineering) psychology which can lead to well paying careers in business.

You should spend some time online looking into the different types of programs there are for psychology and careers they can lead to. This American Psychology Association site might be a good place to start: https://www.apa.org/education-career/guide/careers

These careers require getting into and completing graduate school after undergrad so its really important to keep your grades up as much as you can.

Best of luck to you!

Hi Claire! To be a psychologist, the best major is psychology. You need a bachelor's degree and then a PhD. Some programs are good in that they offer dual degrees in a shorter amount of time. Usually it is 4 years undergrad plus 4 years of PhD; in looking for universities definitely look into the programs offered for psychology. Ask about clubs, internships, opportunities and speak with students who are psychology majors to see how they're supported. There's a lot of factors to take into account when applying for college- aside from looking into the program/degree that you want, cost, location, and environment matter too. Do you want a small school or a larger campus? Would you like to stay in state or out of state? These factors can narrow down you choices and ensure you apply to colleges you want.

I wanted to ask when you are getting your associate's degree? Usually an associates is 2 years and is completed in community college after high school. I think that is a good option too if you want to save money and take general education courses (which are courses all students take regardless of major to obtain an holistic education).

Please let me know if you have questions! I wish you the best!
