How to manage money in college

With having to pay for housing and tuition and textbooks, etc etc, how can I manage my money in a smart and efficient way? #money-management

Thank you comment icon Check the ISBN #s of your textbooks for class and look up books with that number at various retailers to try and get cheaper prices for the same product. Sabina

Great question Alexis. I'm sorry it hasn't been answered yet! I thought I'd share a few links to other relevant Q&A on CareerVillage.org that should be super helpful for you to read through.

I'd also like to chime in :)

I made the most money in college when I was a server at a restaurant. It was also a great learning experience. Don't forget about paid internships! Again, not only will you be making money but you'll be gaining invaluable work experience that your resume will thank you for.

In terms of money-management, in addition to making sure you're working while in school to earn money, a few tips:

  1. Try your best to cook for yourself!
  2. Look into getting your text books for free - search on CareerVillage.org for Q&A about that!! Lots of good advice there.
  3. Create a monthly budget and stick to it.
  4. Learn how to say "no". Sounds silly, but you'll be so tempted to go out with friends a whole bunch and it eats at your personal finances, trust me! Learn how to either say no or simply not buy anything/much while you're out.

Leah’s Answer

I agree with the previous answers provided -- I also worked as a server at a restaurant during college, as it afforded me flexible hours and easy pocket money. The experience was great and you'll meet a lot of new people. Also, it's never too early to learn about money management and how to build and maintain a budget. Start with a simple budget to understand your means of income vs. expenses -- you can find a variety of help options through Google that will provide or guide you in how to build a budget. This is a good behavior to learn and will be invaluable to you as you advance through life and start thinking about long-term savings and retirement goals.
Thank you comment icon Community college is a low-cost way of taking pre-requisite courses before transferring to a University. Be sure the credits you take at community college will in fact transfer to the University you plan to attend. Also, if you're able to find a reliable roommate they can help share your living expenses (rent and utilities). Leah Davis
