Practice and Repetition
One technique, that I can recommend, is reading English poetry and English literature out loud.
One section of literature, that helped me gain confidence, and assisted in my pronunciation, was reading Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven." This section of literature can be initially challenging, when you read it out loud. But, with practice and repetition, you will eventually be able to read through it, without making any audible mistakes.
So, reading English poetry and literature, like an actor reading lines on the movie screen, is a good practice technique, that I recommend.

As a fluent English speaker, I'm sharing this insight from my experience working in various multinational corporations with non-native English speakers who have mastered the language impressively. I often inquire about their strategies for achieving such proficiency in English.
From my understanding, three key strategies emerge as the most effective. Firstly, immerse yourself in English as much as you can. Secondly, find an English-speaking friend with whom you can practice and receive constructive feedback. I know of colleagues globally who use platforms like Zoom to practice languages with native speakers. Lastly, immerse yourself in English movies and TV shows, without the aid of subtitles. An amusing anecdote involves a European colleague of mine who spoke English with a distinctive American accent and used phrases that seemed unusual for his region. People often mistook him for a native American speaker, even though he had never visited the US. His secret? He was a fan of the TV show "Friends" and had watched every episode multiple times. His favorite character was Chandler, and he honed his pronunciation by mimicking the character's speech.
Given that you're based in the US, I'm confident that you'll discover effective ways to master English!

Hello Liam! This is a great question, thank you for asking! English is not my first language, but I got to a point where I actually taught English as a second language for several years, and now English is the primary language I use at work and in my day-to-day activities.
First off, let me tell you, studying English is a journey. I started learning it at the age of 7, and after a few years I couldn't get a grasp of it. I kept getting Fs in class, grammar didn't stick, and I thought it just isn't for me. After a while, I started additional classes with my English teacher to practice grammar. Quite often, our school homework was to retell a text from the textbook, and I started learning them by heart. At first, I was just memorizing the texts, but after a while I could use memorized phrases in other contexts or experiment with changing sentence structures using the knowledge from my grammar classes. And then.... it just clicked. I no longer had to memorize texts, but I just had to know what the text was about and I could retell it in English in my own words. All of this to say, people for whom English is not their mother tongue and they speak it freely today, they all started somewhere.
Here are some tips about learning English or any language for that matter that I believe work well:
1) Practice speaking English. A lot. You may be tempted to use language learning apps, but while those apps may be good to add some words to your vocabulary, they don't really build the conversational abilities. The more you speak the foreign language, the sooner you start thinking in it, and it all starts to come more naturally.
2) Find a good teacher. To practice speaking, it's best to do it with someone who knows how to explain it, so I'd recommend getting a teacher whose first language is the same as yours because they will be able to build on the similarities/differences between English and the language that you are already comfortable with.
3) Pursue opportunities to interact with the English language. There are so many ways to do it! For example:
- Find a song in English that you like, print out the lyrics, translate any words you don't know, and then sing along.
- Watch a TV show or a movie in English. You may want to start with something you are familiar with so you already know the plot and can focus more on the language. At first, you may want to watch with subtitles and it will be a lot like reading, but that helps tremendously to develop your listening skills.
- Read in English. It can be anything: a short story, news articles, a biography of someone you admire. Find a topic that interests you, and you will not only be learning more about something you are excited about, but also working on your English skills.
- Have someone to regularly speak English with. Maybe you have an English-speaking friend you play video games with or find a penpal. If you want to say something, and not sure how to express it in English, look it up in a dictionary or online, and then say it when talking to your English-speaking friend. By putting the word in context, you will remember it much quicker.
- You can even put sticky notes around your house labeling things in English. Or you can write down words or phrases you want to memorize and put them somewhere you can see them frequently, like on the bathroom mirror, so every time you brush your teeth, you can review the words.
Bottom line, find something that works for you and do not be afraid to make mistakes. With time, you will notice that your English is getting better. When that happens, make sure to take the time to celebrate your progress and how far you've come. I am wishing you all the best on your English learning journey!
