Bo’s Answer

Great question Ryan! In some ways males have more opportunity in certain areas such as ER, Critical Care, OR, Behavioral Health and Management. The only area my male peers seemed to encounter some difficulty with acceptance in training was Maternity, as patients were hesitant/reluctant to have a male nursing student. Females outnumber males in nursing 9.5:1 in the US with some variation by state. However, males earn about 5K more than the women in comparable positions. In my 30+ years of nursing practice, I have had the pleasure of working with many male nurses who were quite satisfied with their career. Good Luck in your future endeavors!

Bo recommends the following next steps:

Self assessment- examine your feelings/comfort with working in a predominantly female profession
Compare various degree options (LPN, ADN, BSN, MSN, ARNP)
