How hard is engineering for a girl?

Next year I would be studying mechanical engineering in a four year university, I've heard various times that the work field in engineering is extremely tough, and for girls it's even harder because of the lack of girls in STEM. I know that going into that career you need to have a strong personality and mindset, but, what other advise do you have to face engineering? how hard was it?

Hi Emilia! I agree with the comment from Michael. Engineering is a challenging field regardless of your gender, though it is undeniable that it is a male-dominated field. When I was in school, I encountered some skepticism from my male peers but it didn't discourage me, and eventually everyone understood that we were all there to achieve something. One thing I could say is to be a team player. Talk to your professors, talk to your classmates, make friends. Having a support group to study with makes learning so much easier and more fun. Having friends to suffer Calculus with you is better than doing it alone, right?

Depending on your major, some of the studied subjects can be tough but it is not impossible to learn. Everyone has their least favorite subject of which they do poorly in. I had friends who majored in computer science and they very much disliked taking Chemistry. Personally, I find Physics and Math intimidating. I discover that doing a lot of practice problems and reciting materials after class is a great way to absorb the information. For every hour I spent in class, I tried to spend two to three hours studying it outside of class.

So to answer your question, engineering isn't hard for me because I am a girl but it is hard for me because it is a hard subject. I hope this help! Study hard and keep your eyes on the prize! :) - May

Engineering is not an easy career. It involves open minded thinking, a great knowledge base, teamwork and just some good old hard work. That being said, I’ve hired and had many female engineers in my engineering group. Most have done very well. They enjoy the challenges, are well respected and other engineers enjoy workng with them. The only issues I’ve seen is if engineers (male or female) don’t work hard and not work as hard as their peers. Work hard, be knowledgeable, be creative, communicate well and be a team player and you should do well. Good luck.

Michael’s Answer

Obviously, I am NOT a woman. However I had many female co-engineering students that I went to college with. From my perspective, a female engineering student is no different than a male engineering student. If your focus is on learning engineering: math, science, theory, application - your gender does not matter. Engineering is a hard major. The best advise I was provided was to study and attend classes 8am-10pm M-Th, then relax F-Sat. Study hard again Sunday for Monday. Recognize that college is challenging and regardless of your gender you will have opportunities and setbacks with your university experience. I fully support "girls-in-stem"! Just be weary of people who focus their priorities on the gender pronoun of the engineer rather than the title of engineer.

BARBARA’s Answer

Hi Emilia,

I agree with the others in that it can be a hard topic. However, if it is your passion, it will seem much easier. And if it is how your brain is wired, it will seem much easier. And, if engineering is your passion and how your brain is wired, you will find a career in engineering rewarding.

Have fun finding the area of engineering that makes your heart come alive!!!
