Should I look at teaching abroad for experience?

I enjoy tutoring so much, that I decided to work on becoming a teacher. While I am working on the education process: i.e. degree and credentials, I was wondering If I should also look to teaching abroad for job experience?

Taylor’s Answer

Hi Melissa!

Teaching abroad is such an amazing opportunity. I taught English in Madrid, Spain after I finished my bachelor's degree. It's an incredible way to learn about another culture and broaden your view of the world.

To teach in Spain I needed to have a bachelor's degree and complete my TEFL certificate (which you can complete while getting your degree). Every country has different requirements so if they have a program that allows for fluent English speakers to come work in their country I suggest looking into what the countries' requirements are. Teaching abroad opportunities are offered either through the country's government or through a private organization. I didn't have to be fluent in Spanish to live and work there but it's very useful to know a basic conversation level of the local language where you will be teaching to be able to speak with your peers.

If you do a study abroad program you can definitely find opportunities to be a private tutor in the country you study in if you would like to have an experience abroad before completing your degree as well. You will never forget the experience if you got study/work abroad. It was one of the best experiences of my life.

Taylor recommends the following next steps:

Look into TEFL programs
Utilize your university to identify study abroad options
Research teaching english abroad programs (CIEE is a good option!)
