What are the classes I should focus on to maximize my business education?

I am unsure which area in the business field I am most suited for whether it be in marketing, advertising, accounting, management, finances, I will eventually come to a decision as I reflect on what I enjoy, although I would like to obtain all of the skills and knowledge I need to succeed in the business world.

Paul’s Answer

I would take a variety of courses in the business, accounting, and economics core.

Eventually, you will need to select a specialty in business (accounting, management, marketing, finance...etc).

So courses in economics, marketing, management, accounting, statistics..etc will help prepare you for the various requirements for this major.

Ann’s Answer

Hi Damon,

I know exactly how you feel. I ended up getting to Bachelor's in Management and Marketing, because I couldn't decide. The advice the others gave is spot on. Relationships are so important. You can always get more training and certification down the road. I think the most important thing you can do are take your projects seriously. They will give a hands on feel for what the job will be. They other thing I recommend doing is completing multiple internships, or connect with local businesses to shadow people in the various departments. I shadowed an insurance company for 3 days and I also did a marketing internship. After all that, I went into a field that is completely different from my degrees. Just remember that your major doesn't seal you fate. Good luck!

Lesli’s Answer

Super way to phrase your question - maximize your business education. I would encourage you to take in as much information and experiences as possible. Classes in college are only one way to learn. Opt in to relationships, programs and opportunities your campus, community or other organizations have to offer.

Lesli recommends the following next steps:

You are not in this alone. Reach out to people you believe have insights, keep asking questions and spend time with them. This may lead you to a mentor or at a minimum some great conversations.
Join a club on campus. Get involved. You will likely find others exploring possibilities as well. Clubs often have guest speakers, great visits to companies, specialized small group information or training sessions.
Press on. If you hit some road blocks on step 1 or 2, don't let it derail you. Pick yourself up and go in a different direction! You will not only learn more about different business functions, but you will also learn a lot about yourself.

Christopher’s Answer

Damon, while it’s great that you want to learn business related skills , I can’t stress relationship building, and communication. Anyone can learn accounting, marketing, tech support, etc. however, it’s much more difficult to find someone that relates well to others , and earns the respect of other coworkers.

Christopher recommends the following next steps:

Damon, What are you really passionate about? What aspects of business are you really interested in? Honestly, everyone does better in school or at work if they are learning something they are really interested in.
Honestly, the best skill you can learn in school is how to get along with different personalities. Team work is extremely important in any line or work, and if you’re able to get along with everyone and develop those soft skills, you’ll be able to learn any specific business skill
