Whats the best way to get your foot in a new career?

After I just finish my degree, what would be the best way to get my foot in the door to a new career?

Thank you comment icon The best way to get your foot in the door is often-times through an internship, or volunteering with the organization. You may also consider reaching out through a contact and ask if you can get an information session(do not ask for a job, as this should strictly be informational) to see if the job you're seeking actually aligns with your career goals. I think volunteering for the field/industry that you're interested in is a great idea and if you're looking to get paid while also doing a job you're interested in, you can find temp job/contracting agencies to get a contract job which I personally found, much easier to land, than ready-to-hire jobs. Most contract/temp jobs are contract-to-hire or temp-to-hire, so you'll work a few months on a contract and then if you meet their standards and do a great job, they'll hire you full-time.
After I graduated, it was extremely difficult to get a job and keep in mind I submitted about 100 applications in the span of 2-3 months. But I contacted a temp agency and got a call back within a week. After a few days, I got a temp job. Needless to say, I'm still at that same company today.
This is something that college and high school fails to mention when they talk about career paths. You don't have to go for a full on real time job after you're out of college. I think contract and temp jobs are so overlooked but they are the perfect opportunity to get your foot in the door and learn new skills of what it's like to work.

I would recommend volunteering in the industry that you’re interested in. When hiring for a new position, organizations that use volunteers often hire from their existing volunteer corps. You gain experience that you elsewise would not have, and even volunteer experience is valuable on a resume. Employers generally care only that you’re proficient in a skill, not where you learned it. Additionally, you may be exposed to areas of the industry that you may not have considered before.
