Mary Beth’s Answer

There are actually few true pre-requisites for grad school other than a BSN degree with good grades previously, a few years of nursing work history with letters of recommendation from colleagues and supervisors. In addition many schools still require you to complete the GRE exam (graduate record exam) that measures your understanding of basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis as well as college-level vocabulary. In addition it also measures your ability to analyze written material, evaluate its effectiveness, think rationally and critically, and solve problems.

Check out the schools you are interested in online; each will list the requirements for enrollment. From there you can decide if there are classes that you could complete before matriculating into your chosen university, like an advanced Stats or science course. Each program will have its own requirements to meet Board of Nursing regulations.
Once enrolled then you will be very busy for the next few years with intense studies to complete. Grad school is not for the faint of heart, but if you are passionate about your future in nursing it is worth it all in the end.

Best of luck in your nursing career!

MARY’s Answer

In addition to general education classes and core courses in nursing, prerequisites for applying to a Nurse Practitioner (NP) program typically include:

1. Anatomy and Physiology: A thorough understanding of human anatomy and physiology is essential for advanced nursing practice.

2. Microbiology: Knowledge of microbiology is important for understanding infectious diseases and their treatment.

3. Pharmacology: Understanding the actions and interactions of medications is crucial for prescribing and managing patient care as an NP.

4. Pathophysiology: Understanding the mechanisms of disease processes helps NPs diagnose and treat various health conditions.

5. Health Assessment: Proficiency in health assessment skills, including physical examination techniques, is necessary for advanced practice nursing.

6. Statistics: Basic knowledge of statistics is often required for interpreting research findings and evidence-based practice.

7. Professional Experience: Most NP programs require applicants to have some clinical experience as a registered nurse (RN), typically ranging from one to several years.

8. Letters of Recommendation: Applicants may need to submit letters of recommendation from nursing supervisors or other healthcare professionals who can speak to their clinical abilities and character.

9. Personal Statement: A well-written personal statement outlining the applicant's career goals, motivation for pursuing advanced practice nursing, and relevant experiences can strengthen their application.

10. Licensure: Applicants must hold a current, unrestricted RN license in the state where they plan to practice as an NP.

It's important to check the specific requirements of the NP program at Belmont, North Carolina, as they may vary slightly from one institution to another.

Megan’s Answer

I didn’t need anything beyond my BSN and RN. They recommend two years of nursing but that’s all. Of note I got my MSN FNP from the same University I got my BSN at so not sure if that’s why I didn’t need anything else.
