Lauren,
Have you considered joining the military? All branches offer a career in the culinary arts field. You will get much free training, and lots of experience! Here is a link to the Navy's information. Best of luck to you!

Hi Lauren,
There is no formal degree requirement to become a chef. You can get an associates or bachelors degree at community colleges though, or go to culinary school. I have attached some more information below.
So, it really depends on you, what you want to learn and where you want your career to go. If you are happy to cook burgers and fries at the local diner and the customers are happy, that's fine. If you want to be a chef at a fancy hotel or restaurant, I would recommend culinary school. You'll learn a lot more than just different cooking techniques, but also food handling, kitchen management, proper etiquette when serving food, international cuisines and business skills among others.
Another path to become a chef is an apprenticeship, preferably under a good chef, to learn all the practical skills.
Very important in the chef world is experience. Becoming a great chef will take years of refining your art. After culinary school, you would typically take an entry level position under a good chef and work your way up to being head chef.
Having a degree will accelerate your learning path in the kitchen and improve your earning potential.
I hope this helps! Happy cooking!
