Hi Janiyah,

Wait till after school is over was basically the only option back in the day; but now, with Internet on, there is no need to delay the action, so to speak. You can initiate or get involved into filming projects pretty much immediately, and then present/post/share the results online. This way, by the time the school is over, you’ll have a nice portfolio of complete projects and a network of valuable connections that’ll make it so much easier to boost your career. Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

• if you need developing basic filming skills, enroll into online or onsite training that you can afford (there are free options, too)

• produce your personal (solo) projects, create videos and share them online via social media or a blog

• find amateur groups with the same interests and join them

• look for volunteer opportunities (for movie events, festivals etc.) that welcome applicants with zero to basic experience, to start building your professional network.

• enroll in online video contests to get a feel of the industry.

Good luck!

You can definitely get started before school is over, but you also don't need to wait if you don't want to. If you want to make your own films, you can definitely do that while going to school. Another great thing you could look into is getting onto a set as a PA or interning for a company. Even looking into your local news station could help you to get your foot in the door and would be great to add to a resume for when school is over.
