Hey Avery! It's fantastic to see you considering a career in nursing. This path is indeed tough but equally fulfilling. And guess what? You don't need to be a stand-up comedian to succeed in it! As a nurse, you'll encounter a spectrum of emotions throughout your day. Speaking from my experience as an ED nurse, I've had moments of laughter with patients and times of solemnity, holding a patient's hand during their final moments. With experience, you'll learn to discern when humor is appropriate and when it isn't. As you get to know your patients, you'll understand who enjoys a good laugh and who prefers a more serious interaction. If you're someone who uses humor to cope with discomfort, that's okay. Just keep working on maintaining seriousness when it's called for and staying relaxed otherwise. Remember, you'll have wonderful colleagues to share the highs and lows of the job with. They'll be your solid support system! Just ensure your humor never comes at a patient's expense - that's unprofessional. Wishing you all the best for your future!

Hi, Avery! You present a good question; humor is good for relieving stress and for healing. The most important thing is to know your patient and others who may be present. Some people love humor, and often present it up front, so you can follow their lead, but keep it light. Your interest in nursing as a midwife is admirable. It takes determination, but you can do it! There will be ups and downs in the education process and joys and sorrows in the career. but that makes for a full life experience and lots of empathy and growth. Best to you!
