Lauren’s Answer

Hello Kaidynn - It's truly impressive that you're exploring a career in nursing while you're still in 8th grade. Every profession, not just nursing, calls for a strong sense of responsibility. The nurses I know embody responsibility, intelligence, kindness, and above all, compassion. At your age, it's great to be inquisitive. Don't hesitate to ask any nurses you meet about their career paths and any advice they might have. If you have a school counselor, share your nursing aspirations with them. They could recommend courses, part-time jobs, or mentors that could guide you on your path to becoming a nurse.
Remember, it's perfectly okay to change your mind about your career. Whatever profession you choose, always take pride in your work and yourself!

Wishing you the best of luck!

Maureen’s Answer

Hello Kaidynn,

Lauren hit the nail on the head - it's truly wonderful to see your enthusiasm for nursing at such a young age. I myself dipped my toes in the field by volunteering at a hospital near my high school to figure out if nursing was the path I wanted to take. I dedicated four years to volunteering and was honored with an award for completing 1000 hours.

Volunteering is a fantastic way to learn about responsibility. Our Volunteer Chief always reminded us to promptly respond to the "call lights" from patients who needed assistance with various things like pain management, fetching fresh water, or help with getting to the bathroom.

As you take on tasks at the hospital, you'll have the chance to see the daily life of a nurse in action. You'll escort patients to their tests, deliver blood and other samples to the lab, and return items to different departments. The sense of accomplishment you'll feel after completing your tasks and knowing you've made a difference is simply priceless.

Warmly,
Maureen

P.S. I eventually became a Registered Nurse, earned my master's in nursing, acquired my nurse practitioner certificate, and finally became a nurse practitioner. The opportunities in this field are vast - you can work almost anywhere in the world. Whether you want to travel or settle down in a place you love, nursing can accommodate both. Best of luck, Kaidynn!

P.P.S. One thing's for sure - in this profession, you'll never find yourself bored or struggling to fall asleep.
