That's a fantastic question. Humor can be a great tool, provided it's used wisely. It's not about whether you find yourself funny, but how your patient and others interpret your humor. When done right, humor can strengthen your bond with your patient. However, if misinterpreted, it can lead to a damaging impression of you being uncaring and unskilled, fostering a negative and distrustful attitude towards you and your abilities. Just like a successful comedian, understanding your audience and delivering your humor at the right moment is crucial. I often use humor, but there have been instances where it was misunderstood. Sometimes, I only learn about this after the visit, which can be uncomfortable and not always easy to rectify.

Not only will humor help you navigate what can be a stressful and sometimes depressing job, it will be an asset when working with anxious and frightened patients. You would be especially appreciated if working with pediatric patients specifically.
