History is a very niche subject, but there are a lot of jobs to pursue depending on your interests. As far as archaeology goes, it's not my specialty, but there's always something to be found that pertains to the past. The fraction that people have pulled up or discovered over the years is just a small bit considering how much history has passed. Getting the grants and rights to pursue certain types of history would certainly be challenging, but finding a job that can keep you around this type of stuff shouldn't be difficult if you're motivated and truly passionate about this subject.
The only other advice I can give about this is to have something that will sustain you if it does take time to pursue your passion, since archaeology is still a worthwhile pursuit, but it's something you'll have to work at in order to make a real living.
Do the work, establish yourself as an interested and passionate part of this field, and don't hesitate to reach out and make inquiries when it comes to working with those who might further your goals.
