Hi, Brennen -

I'm a little unclear on your question, but I'll approach it from two angles and maybe one will cover it. :-)

The cost-benefit analysis of applying to scholarships, as a whole, is worth it. You will have to ask yourself what your threshold is going in, however. Does applying for a $500 scholarship with two essays with a deadline before a major test make sense? Perhaps not. Can two prewritten essays be slightly reworked to use for minimal time when you're fully prepared for the upcoming exam? Perhaps so. Only you will be able to determine how much time you have to devote to the scholarship application process and what it's worth to you.

Although many universities do not publish the number, I really wish they did. The average debt incurred by a student upon graduation is a number you want to know. You should ask if they don't provide it in the brochures or website. This number tells you what the average student owes when they graduate. The amount of debt that you start your adult life with (more if you're going on to graduate or professional school). You want this number to be as low as possible. Scholarships are a way to do this.

I hope this will help with your debate!

Maia’s Answer

Hi Brennen,

Earning scholarships absolutely helps you in the future. It can eliminate or minimize the amount of debt you accrue while you're in school from loans and takes some of the financial pressure off of yourself. Applying for scholarships and grants is a great way to be proactive towards your future financial responsibility.

Hope this helps!
