Ashley’s Answer

I would suggest looking into journalism or photojournalism. Many newsrooms want journalists who can take their own photos. Like mentioned above, you can have one as a career and the other as a hobby, or freelance doing both. Being able to do both well makes you that much more valuable to future employers.

Ashley recommends the following next steps:

Look into journalism positions that want both writing and photography skills
Check out photojournalism

Mark’s Answer

Hi Ajay--

You are going to be entering the workforce at a time where you have lots of options!

You will need to concentrate on a primary career and have the other be a hobby if you work for someone else—it's just how things work. The questions to answer might include:

• What is the market for my skills where I live (or want to live)

• What kind of income do I need? Does the skill have the potential to make that kind of income?

• As a creative person, can I take direction from a customer or client, even though it goes against my artistic sensibilities? This is actually a big one. It is one thing to write about or take photographs of things that you have decided to do. When it is something that you will be paid for, your customers and clients will be telling you what they want—style, subject matter, genre. It is an adjustment.

But if you are disciplined and have the desire to work for yourself, you could do both. As a freelance photographer and writer, you have the ability to find clients in either.

As both are creative, the demand for your work will depend on how you bring 'you' to your clients' vision. Make sure you know your work stylistically—have samples showing what you can do—styles of writing, different pieces that show your versatility; photographs that do the same--do you work in B&W and color? do you do digital editing on your work? Do you work in a studio as well as location--these will all be taken into consideration by your clients and customers.

Ultimately, no one can tell you what to do—you will have to make the decision. But this is an exciting time to be thinking about it.

Good luck in your quest!

Mark recommends the following next steps:

Check what salaries are for photographers and writers in your area. A quick web search found me this: Photographers earn a median salary of $34,070 per year. Salaries typically start from $19,110 and go up to $76,220.
A quick web search found me this: Median pay for Writers in the United States is around $48K per year. Try sites like glassdoor.com or just start with a Google search
