Tenia’s Answer

There are many routes to start a career in tech, I would research roles and positions and see what interests you and create a short list. You can enroll in education and network with IT professionals and learn their perspective. There is also the opportunity to freelance and pick up tech gigs to get your foot in the door.

Tenia recommends the following next steps:

Enroll in education
Network with IT professionals
Internship

If you are able to determine what type of career in technology interests you the most. You should be able to choose what career path to follow.

Tenia’s Answer

There is no clear path to starting a career path in technology, but there are helpful items that can get you there. Earning a college degree is helpful for having the background and education. Getting experience through an internship gives you and idea of what working in the tech industry is like. Joining industry specific networking groups well help interact with others and can possibly get more insight. Building a digital resume and getting exposure is helpful and creating a LinkedIn page. Also being proactive and researching companies to get a feel for what you would be interested in and the types of positions that are out there can be helpful to know what is available and to prepare yourself for.

It's possible without a degree to get into the field, but I'd recommend college as a first stage as it's getting harder and harder to break in to the field without a degree. Try to find a course with large amounts of practicum, an internship or a coop option, real life experience during college will help immensely. Try volunteering for smaller charities in their tech support department, they almost never have enough salaried staff to cope and many would be glad of the help. Offer your services to friends and family when they have computer problems, you'll learn lots about how these things work when you try to fix them.

If you are more interested in the internals of the machines rather than the operating systems, you could look into electrical engineering. That deals with the workings of the hardware side of electronics, not just computers and mobiles, but any electronics equipment:
