Johnie’s Answer

Some times your career ends up being the least you expect. At times we try so hard to figure out what we want to do when we are young but end up turning ‘just a job’ into your forever career. The moral is, don’t stress yourself trying to figure out life and career when your young, everything will fall into place if you put effort into your goals.

Jesse’s Answer

This question is so important! The first thing is to understand what you enjoy doing. Everyone will tell you that “if you do something you enjoy, you will never work a day in your life.” It’s great advice, but always find what you are passionate about in any career you look in to. If you value technology, there are tons of options out there. More focused on helping others? Maybe teaching is the way to go. Really it goes to your own personal interests and how you choose to impact your world. You will do great, and whatever you decide to do, just remain energetic, passionate, and have fun every day.

Carmen’s Answer

Hi Samira.

This is an excellent question. A career is what you will love to do every day versus a job which is something you just do because it is what you have to do. When you choose a career, you have to assess yourself. You must consider what are your interests, what are you most passionate about and what do you want for your future. Make a list of the careers you are interested in and learn of them as much as possible. You can also take Career Assessment tests which are available for free online. You should also research specific career outlooks on the US Bureau of Labor and Statistics website. Searching a specific career and what the future looks like for that career will be important. Remember you will be stuck with that choice for years and you sure don't want to regret wasting many years of your life on something that was not fit for you. Don't ignore you intuition and what you feel is best for you. It is easy to fall into our parent's wishes and then realize, this is not what you wanted to do with your life. Keep in mind, you can choose a career later on in life but from experience and the challenges I have had to overcome, I encourage you to choose as early as possible. The earlier you do choose, your life will be much better.

Carmen recommends the following next steps:

Let us know if you need any additional assistance or if you need further clarification on choosing a career. Best wishes on your career choice and keep us posted.
Be sure to seek career guidance. Speak to Career Specialists in your institution and or speak to people working in those fields. Don't be afraid to take the initiative to network and learn from others but remember, it is YOUR choice. Whatever you decide will be the choice you will live with for a very long time. We all know people who do make career changes later in life but then there will most likely be many other challenges to overcome.
Please do your research of occupations using the US Bureau of Labor Statistics website https://www.bls.gov/. "it publishes a large amount of information by occupation, including career information, employment levels and projections, and data on earnings and working conditions." Occupation: Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technologists and Technicians Medical laboratory technologists (commonly known as medical laboratory scientists) and medical laboratory technicians collect samples and perform tests to analyze body fluids, tissue, and other substances. Salary $51,770 https://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/home.htm
Do not make a choice solely on "this career makes a lot of money", you will soon find out later that money is and was not the answer. Even if you make a very satisfactory salary, but you hate what you do, you will not be happy. You will learn this is definitely not how you want to live your life.
Do your homework! Take the time to learn about the positions you are interested in. Find out the education requirements and the career outlook for those positions you are interested in.

Spencer’s Answer

Samira, I answered a similar question just a little bit ago. There are 3 things to ask yourself when choosing a major. Do I enjoy this subject? Could I make money with this subject? Am I good at this subject? Please Google: The Career Venn Diagram. It will explain the difference between a hobby, a dream ( but you won't succeed), and a perfect career. Please don't underestimate enjoying what you do. It is very important, but if you can't make any money and you aren't good at what you want to do, I would be hesitant to tell you that you should pursue it.

Siddhant’s Answer

I believe there are 4 non-negotiable components to choosing a career for yourself. These are taken from the book "Ikigai", and I found them to be invaluable -
1. What you love doing - you should love your job because you would be doing it everyday for the foreseeable future.
2. What you can earn doing - same reason as above, you are in it for the long haul, you need to earn enough to sustain yourself!
3. What you are good at - you should be skilled at what you do enough to teach others, and always striving for excellence, and always ready to put in the effort.
4. What the world needs - there should be a value in your career which the world needs and appreciates. There are times when we feel we aren't making a difference, but the thought of your job should remind you of the impact/happiness you bring to people.

Mounia’s Answer

Finding the right career can be very tricky and hard.
I would definitely say that as a start you should find what you are most passionate about in life.
Think about the things you like to do most, your dreams, your areas of expertise, the subjects in school that you excelled in...
You can then start with a list of jobs you are interested in.
You can define your wealth goals.
You can do some internships, conduct few interviews with people which will help you narrow down your choices.
