HI Jazzmin! Most librarians who lead either mid-size to large institutions, schools or historical archives will a degree in Library and Information Science. Yes, there is such a degree which often surprises people. I'm attaching a link to a listing of those universities offering the degree. I would recommend reaching out to a university that might be nearby and meeting up with one of the professors or counselors to get a deeper idea of the coursework and expectations. It's a wonderful choice of career. Good luck!!

Hi, Jazzmin! Aspiring to be a professional librarian is a good thing! Usually, to be considered a "professional" librarian, one needs to have a degree in library/information science. There are both undergraduate and graduate degrees in this. Check some of the colleges/universities that have these programs. In your case, it probably would be best to complete the undergraduate program and then see how you feel about the field and what comes along, by way of experience. Librarians can go into public, academic, corporate/special libraries, and focus on public service, technical services, cataloging and other specific areas of librarianship. Check out the entry for Librarians in the Occupational Outlook Handbook, which I believe is online. If you want to go into being a subject specialist, you would need to get advanced training in your choice of subject, e.g., medical librarianship; music librarianship; engineering librarianship, etc. Libraries are cool places in which to work! Good luck to you!
