Michelle’s Answer

Hello, Tyran !

What a creative and exciting venture ! There is a lot to learn about owning a service business and it's great that you are gathering the information now !

My advice is to start out by enrolling in Cosmetology school and obtain your state license for doing hair. That would be the very first step. The next step would be applying for work as a hair stylist at local salons and work there for a while. This will teach you the real life ins and outs of running a hair salon/barber shop. For the ultimate payoff, be open to all ages and genders so you can create a large customer base.

As an employee of a salon or shop, you will also know the state guidelines, laws and requirements, so by the time you open your own place, it will come naturally to you. I would also advise taking some management courses at a local community college and online to supplement what you'll learn in cosmetology school. You should work for someone else for a while until you've saved up some money to put towards your investment of the shop.

As an example, there is one barber shop located in Mobile that is $160,000.00 to purchase/own. Price other shops and figure out if you'd want to take on the already rented chairs (other hair cutters to remain there) or if you want to start fresh with an empty salon that you furnish. You will have to look at spaces in your town and get prices for both owning or renting the space. A good place to begin with this would be the Birmingham Business Alliance. Like their website says, they help businesses start, stay and succeed in Birmingham, AL ! I have left a link to their website for you below. Another good place to visit would be the Alabama Chamber of Commerce. I have left a link for you below and you can locate your chamber by town or city. These offices can provide you with the information that you will need to know about opening a shop.

I hope that this is helpful and I wish you all the best !
