What do you need to qualify for an internship?

My field of communication and journalism will probably require me to have on the job experience but I don't know when or how to apply for it.

In my experience, hiring managers for interns like to see experience, but not necessarily direct job experience. In your field of communications and journalism, any published work would be great to submit with your internship (byline articles for your school newspaper, freelance work, work for your personal website, class work, pro-bono/volunteer work etc.)

I've found many hiring managers want to hire college students that are actively involved on campus and have a desire to learn. Internships, after all, are all about learning and finding out if the field you're working in would be the right field for you when you graduate and get a job. Best of luck!

Hi, Brittany. I've done two internships before and from my experience, companies do want a candidate with experience. However, if your major is in communications and journalism, you can highlight the work you've done in your department. Are you involved with the school paper, have you volunteered, or even other small jobs can be highlighted when you apply for a internship. The good thing is that you do learn a lot in your internship, so although you might not have all the requirements, let them know that you are open to learning any new skills. So, remember to highlight the skills you have and be open to learning new skills! Good luck.
