What is a good way to keep in touch with high school teachers that have left on impact on you?

Do you think one way would be to visit your high school in the future and encourage students to go to college, reach opportunities, apply to fun clubs, etc? I truly want to give back to my school community, and I really have appreciated the role that my teachers play in my life. I know I wouldn't be where I am without the countless dedicated and thoughtful teachers I've had the pleasure to meet along my journey. #schoolcommunity

Hi Darlene!

I think this is a wonderful idea for you to go back to your school and visit your teachers face-to-face and really connect with not only them but their students as well. After I graduated, I found many of my teachers were open to sharing their cell phone numbers with me as well as their personal social media accounts and usernames. These two things have helped me keep in touch with my teachers so that I can see how they are doing and check in once in a while. Additionally, my teachers have also kept up with my life as well! Just as an example, after I graduated, my two very favorite teachers found out that I had gotten engaged 2 years later. It was because of our Facebook connection that I was able to invite the teachers to my wedding and they attended! In addition to those connections, I have done a lot of volunteering in the school community around me. I find that having connections with teachers I knew well helped me in finding volunteering opportunities that would really make an impact. Things like shadowing field trips, organizing class events, and even helping prep for large school events are some of the doors that have been opened due to my relationship with old teachers.

Yes, that is a great idea, and I'm sure your teachers and principal would really appreciate it! If you want to meet with students, you might find it helpful to arrange your visit in advance with the school secretary, a college counselor, or a homeroom teacher.
Teachers also really like to hear about what you've achieved since leaving their class. While you're at the school, you might drop by one of their classrooms when they're not teaching and tell them individually what you've been up to. Another way to do this is through a heartfelt email or card thanking them for the impact they had on you and updating them on your life.
Finally, if your school or district gives out prizes or awards for good teaching, you might look into whether the rules for those awards allow for community input. If so, putting in a good word for someone who left an impact on you would be a really nice thing to do.
