What is the best way to stay in contact with co-workers after an internship?

I currently have an internship in Ohio but my school and permanent address is in New Jersey. The people here are good people and might help me in the future. I want to maintain some contact so the opportunity doesn't disappear. What is the best way to maintain contact even when I get busier in the future? #career-development #networking #co-worker #job

Spencer’s Answer

LinkedIn is a great source to keep you in contact with professionals. Also, keep their emails. If there is one or two people that really made a difference in your internship, sending them a thank you card to the office, addressed to them, is a great personalized way of having them remember you and they will likely feel more inclined to support your in your pursuits.

Simeon’s Answer

You'll want to connect on social media and just check in occasionally to see how they are doing. Try to ask people about their personal lives and listen to what they care about. People will remember you much more fondly if you are a good listener.

Hi Joi,

There are a lot of tools today to stay connected with people. Your choice will be on the nature of the relationship. Staying connected in business relationships is LinkedIn. It is not enough to have that connection, you need to work that connection. I actually found that email or even just texting were easier ways to stay connected over time. You want to check in to make sure that you are remembered and to make sure that you would want a reference from that person over time. People and circumstances change. I found another way to stay connected with people is through organizations. I was a member of a national organization where I would go to the yearly event and I would see people that I had worked with before, who were now geographically removed from where we worked together. That once a year connection was still enough for us to stay connected enough to think of each other when job opportunities have come up. I would say scheduling time just to talk every few months is another way to stay connected. I actually use those phone calls as mentoring, for me to learn more about what I do.
