As many others have said, SMART goals are great. In terms of prioritization, you have to find the strategy that works for you. It can be a simple as measuring value vs costs/benefit vs time. Perhaps there are even more factors you need to consider. I've used a cause and effect matrix (c & e matrix) to help drive my decision-making process. Don't try too much at once. When you set large goals, break them down into smaller goals that can be achieved over time. As your experience grows, you'll start to unpack the different areas of life that you'll prioritize. You'll set goals in each of these areas to promote a more comprehensive and holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle.

SPECIFIC – What do I exactly want to achieve?

MEASURABLE – What data used to decide if met.

ACHIEVABLE – Is goal realistic?

RELEVANT – Why am I setting goal?

TIME-BOUND – Within what time period?

Great question---and as leaders many of us continue to define our goals as we learn to juggle and balance items like self-care. Aside from a business leader I am a Fitness Instructor. It is so important we balance and champion our focus on ourselves for a better and brighter you. I will share with you what I share with my fitness students. Place self-care, activities, hobbies or other items on your calendar. Block out and prioritize that time as if it is a meeting. We tend as professionals to use those items as fall back when we have FREE Time. However, it is so important you are taking care of your mind, body and overall spirit! It is a very healthy habit to put on your calendar, when you are going to the gym, perhaps doing your nails, meditating, stretching, going on a walk, reading a book etc. This will allow you to commit to those items and ensure they are completed and prioritized vs. ignored. Then, as items come up and conflict you can easily look at your calendar and determine if you want to uphold to the self-care commitment or modify based on demands. For me, I ALWAYS put my health, needs and wants before others to ensure I am an effective and leader for others. Hope this helps and know you are doing a great job. This is an incredibly good question, and one that is applicable in pretty much all life decisions! My first thought is, all of the advice I read in the answers you have is awesome. Definitely follow all that. I think I want to add my own personally tailored thoughts in addition to the core values that make an effective goal. I think that you should align your lifestyle with your goals. Let's say that you want to run a marathon, so you set a goal to run one! Well, now you need to get from point A to point B. Right now, you may be unable to run half of a marathon. So, to get there, build a habit of running multiple times a week. With consistency and persistence, eventually you will be able to run a goal.

So, when you make goals, try to also plan how you will adjust your habits to align your personal vision of who you want to be. I hope this helps, and good luck with setting your goals!

Setting strong and meaningful goals is something that is much easier said than done. Many, many, many people, of all ages, struggle when setting goals for themselves. From managing their free-time to outlining a career path, goals can be tricky. But the key is to always remember that setting goals is a solution, and not a problem.

Goals for your life can be overwhelming if you look at them as a major make-or-break decision. However, if you break down, let's say, "Where you want to be in 5 five years?" into much smaller goals that can be simplified and completed in a step by step way, setting small and achievable goals assure you are on the right path to achieving a bigger goal. No matter what it is that you want to do specifically, the small goal method will help you accomplish meaningful tasks, and build the confidence that you are working towards your future.
