Should I become a concept artist?
I want to do something with my art but I'm not completely sure what yet, though I love designing characters. Would a concept artist be a good choice? Is it highly competitive(directly) or is it more indirect competition?

Hello, Emily !
Yes, my advice based on what you've asked is that you should pursue a career in Concept Art. That is a career in which you would bring forth your unique style and ingenuity. Yes, all of the arts are competitive, but if you really, really want to do art you will learn that making contacts and networking will open opportunities for you. Also, do not limit yourself to just Concept Art. See which other forms of art you like and become well-rounded as an artist. That will also increase your opportunities for work. Don't think about competition, focus on what you can contribute.
You should go to college and get at least a Bachelors Degree and take a broad spectrum of art classes majoring in Art. You may want to study set design in the film and video departments of whichever college you choose. You never know where your opportunities may come from and you will be glad that you're prepared. Also take a course in advertising as well as a general business course.
In college, you would have wonderful contacts and learn from your required projects. You will start to meet the artist community in the city or town in which you attend college. There is a lot of support on campus and most campuses have a Student Services Center and a huge number of Art Events. It could be a really helpful foundation to take this path.
Remember that versatility, tenaciousness, focus, dedication and confidence are key for this career. Also, think about the flexibility of some of the jobs being remote, some may be in person and some jobs may be freelance in which you can literally work for yourself out of your own studio, easily done from a home office. Get an idea of what the job market is for this field now. I have left a link to some current jobs. Than when you're about to graduate with your Bachelors Degree, check out the jobs again at that time. In the meantime, register yourself as an artist on Linked In and do some virtual connecting and networking there. Follow colleges and companies on Linked In that would be most likely to use your talents. These would be the important things that you can do now and worrying about competitiveness can only hold you back, so enjoy the process and never give up.
I hope that this was helpful and I wish you all the best going forward !

Becoming a concept artist might be perfect if you love creating characters and are passionate about art. Concept artists are super important in industries like video games, animation, movies, and ads. They make visual ideas and designs for characters, places, items, and more.
The competition in concept art can be tough, but it's not all about directly competing with others. It's more about showing off your unique style, creativity, and skills to shine in the industry. Making a cool portfolio, getting better at what you do, connecting with other pros, and keeping up with what's happening in the field can help you do well as a concept artist.
If you really like designing characters and expressing yourself through art, being a concept artist could be a really cool job for you. Just know that you'll need to work hard to get better at what you do and handle the competition in the industry.

Hello Emily,
Creating character designs forms a significant portion of a concept artist's responsibilities. While it may present its own set of challenges, it also brings immense pleasure and satisfaction. If you're keen on utilizing software like ZBrush, you can undoubtedly excel in the realm of concept art.
You'll find that most teams foster a harmonious and positive environment. Besides the healthy competition that spurs us to do better, we also gain valuable insights and learnings from our peers.
I would suggest you to compile a few top-notch samples that showcase your talent.
Best regards,
Javad

Hi Emily,
From my knowledge, concept art is very competitve now, especially if it's in the game industrial. It needs a lot of passion on not only character design but also world-building and storytelling skills etc.. I think you could try to learn more about the concept art by reading artbooks and following some concept artists to see how they practice/study/think. If you have made your mind to become a concept artist then go ahead for it! If you are not sure, you may also find another goal during your exploration to the concept artist. Don't be fear about the industrial/career at the begining.
I hope this helpful:3
