Estelle’s Answer

That is highly variable depending on the specialty or subspecialty of the surgeon. Some surgeries take 15 minutes, while others can take all day.

Rachel’s Answer

In colorectal surgery, case volume depends both on the type of case and the speed of the surgeon operating. Additionally, it depends on whether the cases are performed open or robotically.

For a colorectal surgeon, it is not uncommon for 10 colonoscopies to be performed in 1 day. Two to three robotic colon resections are performed in one day. 5-10 hemorrhoidectomies can be done in 1 day.

Richard’s Answer

The answer depends on the complexity of the case and the number of hours you are willing to work. It also depends on the efficiency of the hospital and the support staff's ability to get the patients in and out of the room quickly.

With all this variability, the range can be from 1-10 cases per day.

Christopher’s Answer

Case volume varies widely across specialties and even within specialties depending on a particular surgeon’s practice patterns. For example, as a neurosurgeon some of my cases may only take 30-60 minutes and one can do 5 or more in a day. On the other hand, some of the complex brain tumors and spine reconstructions may take 8-12 hours or more, with the most complex being staged over multiple days.

Christopher recommends the following next steps:

Try exploring the different surgical specialties at the American Collegeof Surgeons (https://www.facs.org/education/resources/medical-students/faq/specialties). As you focus on a single specialty you may be able to get more specific numbers.
You may be able to search the Nationwide Inpatient Sample for numbers on procedures nationally by year. https://www.hcup-us.ahrq.gov/nisoverview.jsp
