Did you ever consider switching your major from elementary education? If so, why?

Thank you comment icon Hello Hannah! I have considered it actually. Recently, I have been volunteering at my church school as a Teacher Assistant for first grade. Although I love kids and thought I was set on becoming an elementary teacher, the experience has opened my eyes to see how different my idea of becoming a teacher was from the actual job. But that's okay! That's what shadowing/internship opportunities are for; to see whether a career is right for you or not. So I definitely recommend that you find a teaching opportunity to help you make a decision. (Who knows? You might LOVE it!) I hope this helps and I wish you the best! Mireia

I'm currently teaching 6-9 right now and I have colleagues that are majoring in elementary teaching. I would say the number one thing they consider when wanting to switch majors is the age-level and maturity of the students this age. You can be placed anywhere from k-6 when majoring in elementary education. There is a huge developmental and behavioral gap between students in any of these grades/ages. So, my suggestion to you is definitely get a lot of experience with kids this age prior to committing to any degree. They can be wonderful, but kids this age range are also a lot to handle. You will also need mastery of a variety of subjects vs. in secondary ed you only need mastery of the subject you are teaching (at a higher skill level of course).

Hey, actually I have, my school did not always have elementary education and last year when we first got it I considered taking the elementary pathway, I considered it because I love kids and when they are young it is easier to leave a better impression on school and to make them actually enjoy it.

I found that I had a preference for literature and writing, which made Secondary Education (English) a better fit for me. You will naturally gravitate to the area that is your true calling.
