What mechanisms do you have in place that make it so the atrocities you deal with day-to-day don't spill over into your home life?
One of my biggest concerns regarding a career as a criminal profiler is that I will be unable to disconnect myself from my work once I go home. I imagine the stories and people you meet stay with you and unavoidably haunt you. I am afraid this will ultimately darken my view of life. How do you prevent the negative experiences from influencing your daily life and those you interact with.

Hi Megan,
Wow, that is a tough one! Everyone tries to balance work and home life as best you can.
I work in aviation, and I promised my wife that I will not bring any aircraft or parts of aircraft home.
My wife works in genetic cancer research, and I made her promise that she will not bring any body parts or medical stuff home.
You set boundaries and stick to them. Work can be very frustrating at times, and if you take great pride into what you do, it will not always be easy to leave everything at the time clock.
I have hobbies and interests outside of work that help me get my mind off work. Your mind will always be going, you just have to control the direction. Surround yourself with activities and stay busy. Find others with common interests outside of work.
Good luck.

Hi Megan,
It is very impressive that you're already so passionate about your career choice. I think everyone struggles at times to separate work from home life and vice versa. You are only one person, so it is very reasonable to expect that the two worlds will bleed over from time to time. The trick to managing the blending day-to-day is to gain mental strength and awareness.
One way that I've done this in my own life is through meditation. The practice of meditation will strengthen your mindfulness--your ability to be aware and present of your current mental state. Your mind is like a muscle. You are able to train it to compartmentalize stressors. You can also train it to turn on and off focus. Meditation is tremendously beneficial to people in all career fields and all stages of life.
To start, there are numerous resources (free) online for guided meditation. Start small, meditate for 5 minutes. Gradually build your strength and the duration that you are able to meditate. As you do your research on
mindfulness, you will see that many professionals in high stress jobs use meditation techniques as a means to cope with stressors and maintain a healthy mental (and physical) state.
Much luck to you in the future!
