Starting as a PA is the most common way, and you'll get paid (as opposed to an internship which may be unpaid). Look into the DGA's training programs, working in the AD department gets you on set and being a part of making things happen.
Thank you comment icon For those of us who don't know what the acronyms mean can you define them please? Sidney
Thank you comment icon PA=Production Assistant. These are the runners on a production, the lowest level employees that are the lifeblood of any movie. DGA=Directors Guild of America, and AD=Assistant Director. The training program is here: http://www.dgatrainingprogram.org I should also add: get out there and make your own short films. Making films is the best way to learn. You WILL make mistakes, and every director I've ever spoken to has said their first film (or films) were terrible, but the lessons they learned making those early films were invaluable. You don't need expensive gear, so if all you have is a phone or a GoPro, use that. Rich Hansil

As early as possible try to go to film classes along with any video production classes. As you start out you'll have to be doing many of the jobs a normal film production would have, by yourself. That includes learning how to shoot, how to edit, sound editing, lightning, writing etc. Heck you may even have to star in your own film. This all adds to your resume. Having content that people can look at to see your work.

School is a great way to meet people and network to fulfill various needs. Whether it be at community college or a university, you'll be able to meet students, or professors, who can aid you in your work. They can help you make the film, you may meet great cinematographers, people who know how to act, people who are good at editing etc. Professors may even have connections in the film industry.
