How to give back to your community as a PR professional?

I'm currently studying to become a PR specialist and I was wondering what are some ways to improve the community in this profession. I know we can work for non-profits, but do private or in-house agencies ever give back? #PR #GiveBack

Always find a way to give back. Find a reading program or inner city anything. You'd be surprised who you will meet while there. They will have a chance to see you in action. If you're a good person, care about others, work hard (esp. when volunteering), it will be noticed by the right person.

Bottom line: it's about your sincerity and willingness to serve that outshines all.

I've never worked at an agency, but I have worked at a non-profit and at for-profit companies. The non-profit work was really rewarding, but you should know that most non-profit marketing jobs are targeted at donors (that is, raising more money for the non-profit). Working in-house, however, can offer you a ton of opportunity to make a difference. My current company makes it easy for employees to donate time and money to causes that matter to you, and they actively encourage making a difference in the community. So I would say it depends on the company -- but there's plenty of opportunity to give back if you find the right fit.

The individual organization you work for might have opportunities that you can participate in as a pro-bono PR professional, but it's still a good idea to pursue what interests you. Find an organization that could benefit from your PR skills- your writing, your ability to put on an event on a tight budget, your ability to cultivate relationships with donors- and offer your skill set. There is ALWAYS a need for fundraising, so they will definitely be able to use your skills, and you can continue to develop them. Good luck!
