You do not have to have a certain college degree to be a swim coach. t's possible to become one with only a high school degree or GED. However, experience and network is key here to land a great coaching job and opportunity. You may find that experience in other jobs will help you become a swim coach. Many swim coach jobs require experience in a job such as a lifeguard or swim instructor. Many swim coaches also have previous career experience in roles such as swim instructor or some type of internship.

USA Swimming offers a course called Foundations of Coaching 101 for $15. The course takes approximately 90 minutes to complete. Results are automatically reported into the USA Swimming database upon successful completion. Taking this would be a beneficial step to becoming a swim coach and adding credentials when you apply for openings. Also, job positions also likely require safety training and/or CPR training. Prior to applying, make sure that you understand the requirements they are looking for to further your chances of getting hired.

Highly recommend seeking out a "Shadowing" opportunity to follow a swim coach to learn more about what they do. Offer to volunteer to get experience under your belt. It's common that dedicated volunteers can often be the first people considered when a full-time position opens up. Good luck!

Coaches are available at all levels for individuals. One of the best routes may be to volunteer with after school activities for an existing swim program and asking the coach there to let you become an assistant.

It would be a good idea to study something relevant in teaching or physical therapy as typically a job in coaching is also tied to a school position.
