Should I worry about the future of artificial intelligence when selecting a career?

Since I was six years old I have dreamed of becoming a teacher. However, I recently read and article online that predicts that within 50 years half of all human occupations will be replaced with artificially intelligent robots. Should I be concerned about my career as a teacher being cut short by a robot? #teaching #robots

Dear Maeve,
I think this is a fair question. I'd be lying if I didn't say that we are all a little bit confused about what the future of our jobs look like. But that said, you should follow your dream. I honestly don't envision teachers being replaced anytime soon. And the world needs good teachers. I believe that the key is to be adaptable - always be learning, always be curious about the future, and always be agile. Your job will change and evolve as technology and the world change and you will need to be ready for it. I wish you well on your journey. Please let me know if I can further help you!

I would worry more about Artificial Stupidity than Artificial Intelligence. There's a long list of predictions that never happened. For instance, in the 80s, people thought we would have true intelligent domestic robots by the year 2000 through AI -- didn't happen. Also look up the predictions by Isaac Asimov and Arthur C Clarke and then laugh -- and weep -- at the marvelous future that never was. Even before robots, people were thinking that computers were going to make teachers obsolete or change this area radically (look up Seymour Papert, for instance). Also didn't really happen.

But let's say the worst happens and for some miraculous reason, AI does take over. Then it's not just teachers: a lot of us would be in danger of losing our jobs. As others have pointed out already: this has happened before, and every time now jobs appear. Just be aware that you'll have to be flexible and be willing to learn new things all the time and you'll be fine.

I wouldn't worry. For every menial task robots fill, there will be 10 other jobs created in the robotics field. There will always be a job. Classic examples tractors never replaced farmers - it just created farmers with more power, computers never replaced banking - it just made it more available, ATMs never replaced all the teller - it kept some tellers along with new jobs created to make those ATMs (both hardware and software).

The future is much brighter than what is posed as a robotics problem. There is numerous career today which never existed 10 or 15 years back. And as a teacher, I wouldn't worry at all. If there is anything, there will be a need for more and more teachers in the future. The only suggestion would be to keep up with the technology. Always upgrade yourself with new technology, be curious, and willing to learn like (and from) your students.

Big plus on being a teacher is that dealing with younger people for the majority of the time will keep your mindset and health young as well. Go for it!!!
