How can my field of career (computer science) benefit the world?
I’m interested in computer science and want to make a living out of it. I also want to help the world as well though. So I was wondering how this field could help benefit the world.

I agree with Victoria, if you major in computer science you can join pretty much any field in the world these days. Depending on how you want to contribute, you can look at legal, not for profit companies, full on charity work. Even if you start in the corporate world, there are many many volunteering opportunities that you can contribute to as well. All non-profits need websites, tech support, data analysis, etc - no matter what area of tech you specialise in you can contribute. Let's face it, tech is everywhere now, non-profits need it as much as the corporate world. If you are serious about wanting to help make a difference (depending on your interests) look at medical technology, non-profits organisations, corporate companies that prioritize social wellbeing, government institutions, etc - basically search on the topics you are passionate about, they'll almost certainly want some form of tech.

Hi Lucky,
OMG, Computer Science is a great career choice. Many times technology makes the greatest contribution when it serves humanity. You can make a big impact by honing your STEM skills through computer science and combining these skills with applied problem solving. Check out the field of applied computer science, in this Verizon link below:
http://www.verizon.com/about/our-company/humanability
Please check out links on our main website to other areas that sound interesting to you including internships and weneedmore and keep a journal or bookmark anything that catches your attention. This will help you define your path.
There are literally thousands of applied computer science problems we need your help to solve.
Go ahead and Google some of the topics below to see what is happening in all areas of your field right now.
This is a very exciting time to be a computer scientist:
Big Data Human Genome
computer science biomedical engineering
Biotech
computer science space exploration
computer science solves hunger problems
Verizon smart cities and computer science
Find an applied computer science problem that means something important to you.
Who is working in this area, what are they trying to do, how could you become a part of the mission?
Start small: maybe help a food bank automate inventory, create an app that solves a need you see in your community, or teach kids how to code.
Whatever gets you excited, figure out how to use your skills to bring value to this issue. You will meet like minded people trying to solve problems and find mentors who can help you find your way. You can bring the science and work with team mates who bring the social context and requirements/human needs.

To add to Carol's answer, a friend of mine works for Classy.org, they provide software solutions for non-profits. I would contact them and ask if they have any internships available. If you get one, you'll also get to know some of the Charities that they work with.
