J’s Answer
After high school, you need to spend 4 years in college, 4 years in medical school, and 6-8 years in residency after medical school. That's 14 to 16 years of school after you graduate from high school.
A bit more info on each step:
Step 1) You need 4 years in college to get a bachelor's degree, preferably in pre-med or other related biological, physical or chemical science. In college, you need to repare to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). It also helps do find research, shadowing and community-service opportunities in college because many medical schools look for a commitment to the community and a healthy desire to help others. After taking the MCATs, you select the medical schools to want to apply to, complete and submit the applications to American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS), and wait for an invitation from medical schools to complete their individual application or go to the next part of the application progress, e.g., an interview.
Step 2) In medical school, you apply for neurosurgery residency programs in your senior year.
Step 3) There are 99 accredited Neurosurgery residency training programs in the US. The average length of the residency is seven years, though some programs are six years and many are eight years. Because of how long the residency is, most programs only accept 1-3 residents each year.
