Grant’s Answer

Hi Wendy!

Accounting is often considered one of the hardest majors because it requires a high level of precision, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of complex financial concepts, rules, and tax laws.

1. Intense Coursework: The coursework in accounting is intensive and requires a firm understanding of mathematics. You'll need to learn about all aspects of business, including finance, economics, statistics, and more.
2. Attention to Detail: Accounting requires meticulous attention to detail. Even a minor mistake can cause significant problems in financial statements, which could lead to legal issues.
3. Complex Rules and Regulations: Accountants must understand and abide by a variety of complex financial laws and regulations. These rules can be difficult to understand and apply correctly.
4. Certification Exams: If you want to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), you'll have to pass a notoriously difficult exam. Studying for this exam is like a job in itself, and many people have to take it multiple times before they pass.
5. Constantly Evolving Field: The accounting field is always changing. New laws and regulations are constantly being introduced, and accountants need to stay up-to-date with these changes.
6. High Pressure & Stress: There can be a lot of pressure in accounting, especially during tax season. This stress can make the major even more challenging.
7. Heavy Workload: Accounting students often have to juggle a heavy workload, which includes not just classes but also internships and part-time jobs to gain practical experience.

Despite these challenges, many people find accounting to be a rewarding career. It offers a stable job market, good pay, and the opportunity to work in a variety of industries.

I hope this helps!

Hi! Accounting has always been considered a difficult subject because it requires you to think differently. There are technical aspects of the subject matter but accounting in general may require you to think in a way you've never encounter. But this does not apply to everyone and do not be intimidated by this! I made the mistake in college by not taking accounting courses due to people around me telling me it's difficult. I later went back to school for a post bachelor accounting certificate and realized that it wasn't so bad as people made it out to be. The learning curve in the beginning might be high but once you get a hold of it it's not so bad. Do give it a try with a open mind and don't let the stereotype hinder your future!

Keisha’s Answer

Accounting is often considered one of the more challenging majors due to its complex and technical nature. Here are some reasons why accounting is considered a challenging major:

1. Technical and Conceptual Complexity: Accounting involves a significant amount of technical knowledge and skills, including understanding financial principles, regulations, and standards. Students are required to learn complex accounting principles, rules, and procedures, as well as how to apply them in various situations. This can be challenging for many students who may struggle with the technical aspects of accounting.

2. Attention to Detail: Accounting requires a high level of attention to detail and accuracy. One small mistake in financial statements or calculations can have significant implications for a company's financial health or compliance with regulations. Students must develop strong analytical and problem-solving skills to ensure accuracy in their work.

3. Constantly Evolving Regulations: The accounting industry is subject to frequent changes in regulations, standards, and reporting requirements. Students must stay current with these changes and understand how they impact financial reporting and decision-making. Keeping up with these changes can be challenging and require ongoing education and professional development.

4. Math Skills: Accounting involves a significant amount of math, including calculations, financial analysis, and interpreting numerical data. Students must have strong math skills and be comfortable working with numbers to succeed in accounting. For some students, the math-intensive nature of accounting can be a challenge.

5. Time Management and Workload: Accounting programs often have a heavy workload with numerous assignments, projects, and exams. Students must manage their time effectively to stay on top of coursework and meet deadlines. Balancing coursework, internships, and extracurricular activities can be challenging for accounting students.

6. Professional Ethics and Integrity: Accountants are expected to adhere to high ethical standards and maintain integrity in their work. Students must understand and apply ethical principles in their decision-making and financial reporting. Upholding ethical standards can be challenging in complex financial situations and under pressure from clients or employers.

While accounting may be considered a challenging major, it can also be rewarding and offer a range of career opportunities in various industries. With dedication, hard work, and a strong commitment to learning, students can overcome the challenges of accounting and build a successful career in the field.

Thomas’s Answer

Hi,

I'm probably the last person who should be answering this, but I had to take two accounting classes for my music business degree. Accounting is what businesses run on. Without knowledge of numbers (and predicting where those numbers will be at different times) is very important for budgeting, ordering necessary materials, and planning for things commonly unthought of (like how to get the most money back when selling a company vehicle). Because of all these important things riding on accountants, going to school for it will be hard. Lots of numbers, equations, and graphing/ charting your numbers to see where you are and where you are going with your company's money.

Here's the thing. All majors have hard components. The real question is- do you enjoy the work accountants do? If you find numbers interesting or enjoy predicting budgets and deciding how money should be spent, then Accounting is definitely something you should think about doing. Every college student will say they have the hardest major. That doesn't matter. Do what you love and then the work, while difficult, will be rewarding. That's the ultimate goal.
