Spark, great question. This does vary from person to person but a couple things stay pretty consistent.

Make it a positive and repeatable habit. Studying for 6 hours before a big test is not a positive experience and is difficult to repeat. However, studying 45 minutes every day is more manageable.

Take notes, even when you don't to. It is a proven fact that when you write things down you have a higher probability of retaining the information. How you take notes varies as well. I have always enjoyed a spiral notebook. On the right side I write the notes as they are given. However on the left side I make my own references or tips. On the left I do not write in the lines. This helps me spark (no pun intended) a memory.

Be consistent. In every aspect. How you take the notes, how you study, the habits. This makes it a routine. Routines are something you normally do not break.

Make friends. Study groups are a great way to share ideas, stay on track, and retain information as well.

Lastly, and very importantly, reassess. After every quiz or test, take a look at how you study and then make changes as needed.

Get a good pen, you might be writing alot. (this is does not need to be pen and paper, computer works too).

Now get to studying, we need more educated people.

Thank you for your question. The most important is ensure you have good time management. You cannot do the assignment & projects right before the deadline and have to do revision of assessment & exam early.
Firstly, you need to find a time management tool that suits you, e.g. Google calendar, MS Outlook, your phone calendar, etc.
Below are my suggestions :
1. Put down the time you need to attend school
2. Assign some time everyday on our assignment and projects. Review the material covered in the class on the day. If you have any question or anything not clear, raise it to the teacher on the next school day
3. Prepare the material for next day classes
4. Make sure you have sufficient time to sleep and do some exercise
5. Assign more time for revision before assessment and examination

Just to add! All of the advice here is excellent! Do look for good Study partners and create (or join) a study group for your most challenging subjects! Having a study partner will:
a) Maintains accountability and support for each other!
b) New ideas to be shared on how to study and develop them.
c) Once you start to master a subject, start to help other students by tutoring, it will reinforce what you know and help another student develop positive & effective learning skills!
