Dear Kristen,

Is it Possible for Me to Acquire a New Language Besides English at 15?

Absolutely, Kristen! You can indeed learn a new language other than English, even at 15. The age factor actually works in your favor. Here's why:

1. The Age Advantage:

At 15, your brain is still in a highly adaptable phase, making it an efficient machine for learning new languages. Studies show that younger individuals often find it easier to pick up new languages due to their brain's flexibility.

2. Drive and Enthusiasm:

Your personal drive and interest in mastering a new language are key to your success. If you're excited about this learning journey, it can significantly boost your learning experience and results.

3. Tools and Assistance:

Make the most of the tools available such as language learning apps, online courses, textbooks, language exchange programs, and interactions with native speakers. These resources can make your language learning journey more fruitful.

4. Regular Practice and Immersion:

Dive headfirst into the language you wish to learn by practicing it regularly. Incorporate this new language into your everyday life by listening to its music, watching its movies or TV shows, reading its books, and conversing in it with others.

5. Patience and Tenacity:

Remember, learning a new language requires time and effort. Be patient with yourself and remain tenacious even when you encounter hurdles. Regular practice will eventually lead to progress.

So, yes, Kristen, you can certainly learn a new language other than English at 15. With commitment, enthusiasm, the right resources, regular practice, and a positive mindset, you'll be speaking a new language before you know it.

Top 3 Credible Sources Used:

American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL): ACTFL offers research-backed insights into foreign language teaching and learning techniques suitable for learners of all ages.

Cambridge Assessment English: This organization provides useful information on language learning strategies and resources designed for young learners like you.

The Linguist: A trusted source covering various facets of language acquisition, offering tips for effective language learning at different life stages.

May God bless you, Kristen!

Duolingo is a great tool to help you learn a language. Another way to become acquainted with and learn a language it to watch TV shows or movies in the language. Find an age-appropriate show via cable, the internet or streaming platforms in the language that you want to learn and watch it regularly. You ear will become attune to the language over time and you will start to understand it and obtain a vocabulary in it. My cousins lived in a foreign country as children and learned English through Sesame Street. My 18-year-old daughter watches teen TV shows in Spanish and has greatly improved her Spanish-language skills; she has also gained the confidence to speak to native Spanish speakers.
