When should a person decide what they want to major in?

I am a senior in high school and I am not sure what I want to study and when I say that, my parents think I will not be successful in college if I am undecided. What should I do?

Leslie’s Answer

Unless you want to be an engineer, most fields don't need you to declare your major until the end of your sophomore year of college.

Leslie recommends the following next steps:

Think about your favorite subjects in school to navigate options.
Think about how much education is needed for careers of interest and whether or not you are willing to go to grad school, med school, law school etc...

Deciding what to study in college is not an easy task but there are a few things you should consider:

1. What subjects do I enjoy now- Math, Reading, Music etc. You will tend to do better if you love what you're doing
2. What career path do you think you would like to take. Do you want to be a teacher, develop applications, design buildings etc? This will guide you towards a subsection of majors to choose from
3. What will be my earning potential? You don't want to go to school to end up not being able to get a job so you do have to think about what kinds of skills are in high demand
4. Take some time to look at the different majors that are offered at the colleges that you are interested in...sometimes, you can find that there are majors you never even thought about. Also, talk to Professors and Career advisers if you can.
5. Some colleges allow you to start without deciding on a major upfront. You can use that opportunity to hone in on what you want to major in by trying courses that align with what you like , what your strong suits are or what you think will give you good career options after graduation to determine what choice to make
6. Also, you do sometimes have options to do more than one major or a major and minor or even switch majors.

All that being said, the world we live in today changes so much so I am a strong believer in always being willing to learn so even after you have chosen a major and maybe even graduated with it, you may need to learn other skills on the job or to switch jobs etc.

Hope that helps.

Thanks
Yema
