I believe both networking and internships are both very valuable. Networking will allow you to meet individuals and talk to them about the work that they do currently, and provide the opportunity to meet ask questions. You may for example, obtain a key contact through networking and ask for shadowing opportunities. Internships will allow you to obtain hands on experience in a potential career, and allow yourself to determine if you enjoy the position and if you could potentially see yourself in that position long term.

Hi Diamond,

Networking and getting internships are ALWAYS a good idea. The more experience you have, the better. Not just to be successful, but to learn about what you do/and maybe don't want to do with your life. And, internships = networking, because you're meeting people in the field you want to be in. Do you know any accountants? If so, I would reach out and see if you can shadow them at work for a few hours one day. Ask them if they know of any internships at accounting firms in the area and how you would go about getting one!

I hope this helps. Best of luck!!

If you can find internships you are qualified for before starting college, go for it! However, at least in my experience, most accounting internships expect you to have taken some college courses on the subject before you can even apply. I did two internships, one before my senior year of college and one the summer after, and I think that is more typical. There were other programs offered for earlier college students, but not internships.

It could be different in New York though; I'd suggest you reach out to any accounting societies/clubs at your college to find out what the normal time frame would be and what opportunities you could pursue. That is how I found out about the internship that has since led to my full time position with PwC.

I would echo the earlier advice that a good way to get an internship is to think of anyone who works for any kind of accounting firm. Meet with that person and ask about their daily work and get a feel for what their accounting career is like. You can also ask if they know of any opportunities at their own company, or a different company, to do any part time work. It could be anywhere from a couple hours a week to a full time position during the summer. Keep in mind many internships are not paid, but what you learn will be worth it.

I would encourage you to network and get as much experience as you can! Deciding what to study in college is challenging, so more networking and experience will help you make the decision. While networking, ask questions about what the person's role is and what they do in their daily life. Getting real world experience will also help you in the classroom! I personally had some business experience before going into an accounting degree and it definitely helped me.
