I don't know what career I want. I want to somehow get an idea of my interests.

I'm asking because right now I'm majoring in Aviation to be a commercial pilot, I go to San Diego Miramar College. However, when started taking classes, I feel like I don't want to do it anymore, and now I'm confuse what am I suppose to do. #career path.

Hi Eunice,

Your question is a common one. Finding out what we will be happy doing can be difficult and a challenge for almost everyone. Few people know what they want to do 'right off the bat.' Some, continue to be unsure well after they are a working adult, which can be unfortunate.

What I suggest is, whenever possible, get information about different occupations, especially by talking to those who are doing what you might find interesting.

Develop an "inner voice" (in your head) - - if you don't already have one, and think about (consider in your mind) what you like and what you don't like in general. For example, do you like working with people, or more alone? Do you like science, or creative arts? Is there something that you see that you are developing an ongoing passion for doing? Do your best to test if what you are thinking you like and don't is accurate, and whether that changes as you experience things. Keep an open mind. Wherever possible try not to limit your options as to what you can do.

I hope some if this is helpful - - at least you should know that you definitely are not alone in figuring this out. Good luck!

Regards,

Fred

It would help to take some time to understand the alternatives. Take as much time as you need to really think about your other career interests and how fulfilling it would be in that career. Also really understand what the next steps would be to pursue a new career knowing you may be behind in getting into a new path. Make sure you are willing to make the commitment to change paths and be confident in your decision.

Kim’s Answer

This is very common. Many times folks think they want to do something because it looks fun, but once they get involved it could be way more technical than was thought. Think about what attracted you to Aviation to become a commercial pilot. And what is it about the classes you are taking that you do not enjoy. Seek advice from a college counselor. Perhaps you can find interested in another role within the Aviation field, perhaps sharing with a counselor what interested you in that role in the first place may help them determine other areas that you may be interested in. Good luck to you.
