What are some classes that you recommend I take that align with Sports Entertainment and Marketing?

I am going to be a freshman in college this fall. I have always been interested in advertising and how sports plays a role in this industry. Ever since I went to Syracuse for a pre-college program last summer I have always been interested in the sports aspect of marketing. #sports #marketing #entertainment #advertising

There are a multitude of options for you. I would definitely take a look at Syrcacuse's Communications department as I know they have many sports writers and a good marketer needs to be a good writer. Any class that will help your digital skills is a plus as well. Look for something that will teach you the different Adobe tools as many sports teams are looking for people that can use that now. An advertising class would be a good option as would your traditional marketing courses.

Are you going to Syracuse in the fall? They actually have a dedicated sports management program.

I would focus on figuring out exactly what the main thing is you want to do as your major and figure out a way to minor in the industry you're interested in. I majored in Art/Graphic Design and minored in Music Technology because my dream job is to be a designer/art director for the music industry. So, for "sports marketing," I would consider majoring in Marketing and choosing a minor either in Entertainment or Sports Medicine. If you're more interested in the design/advertising aspect of Sports Marketing, you might consider Graphic Design as your major. If you're more interested in one day being a sports anchor/announcer, I would major in Journalism, Telecommunications, or Communications. Think of it as your major is going to hone those base skills which will translate across industries and fields, and your minor is going to expand your knowledge of the industry you desire. Since I completed college, I have worked as a graphic designer in many industries including architecture/interior design, food and entertainment, youth programs, human resources, and property & casualty insurance information technology. My major and foundational skills as a designer have translated and transferred across industries, so I did not put my eggs in too narrow of a basket. Doing that will allow you to be more versatile and have more employment opportunities in the long run.

Marketing, Communications, and Journalism are all relevant majors. That said, there are some schools (like Syracuse) that offer Sports Management and Sports Marketing as majors.

I would advise you to take marketing courses that will provide you the foundation to understand marketing overall. I believe the sports entertainment is one aspect of marketing. The marketing field is a vast area of study and the knowledge necessary is as vast as the field. Get into the marketing area and take some of the entry level courses to help you understand if this is your area of passion, get exposed to the different facets and learn, then decide your life's path.
