Hi Elizabeth,
I would say a good first job is one that either helps you decide on a future career, gives you some useful skills and experiences for your future career or some transferable skills.
So, if you are torn between career A and career B, doing any work or volunteering in or close to one or both of those fields might help you decide.
Some professions expect you to have experience even as a student or for an entry-level position. Medical school e.g. expects you to have many hours of medical experience. It makes sense to start early.
Don't diss retail or fast food jobs. They are often flexible, they hire teenagers, some fast-food chains have good education benefits, and you can put things like customer service experience or teamwork on your CV.
If you are not in the fortunate position to choose less or no pay for an experience, but primarily need to make money, there are good summer jobs e.g. in manufacturing or construction.
I hope this helps! Good luck!

Less flexible but more pay would be industrial or manual labor jobs. (Packing plants, construction type work).
More flexibility in the schedule but less pay would be retail and restaurants.
