Becoming professional in the workplace is about focus, understanding your role, and the greater business implication of what you're doing. The truly professional people are able to create a clean separation between their personal relationships, and the goals of the day/week/year. When you start work it's really easy to become invested in the interpersonal relationships of your workplace. Those are important, but nothing should be more important than the work. It's what you're being payed for! Learning the balance between the two takes time, but once you get it, you can have some of the most rewarding relationships AND do the best work of your career when you are supported, nourished, and dedicated to your role.

This is a great question. There are professionals in every profession. Professional means that you have committed yourself to the education, training, and application of skills to a specific area. That area can be anything. There are professionals in business. There are professionals in sports. There are professional artists. What do you see that they all have in common? They have committed themselves to continuous learning and improvement. To become a professional, first pick your profession, then apply yourself to get the education and training in that area. Then look for opportunities to apply those skills. As you apply those skills, you will be on the road to being a professional in whatever you do.

Decey - By asking this question, on this platform... you are already on your way. Being professional means being respectful, understanding, and knowledgeable about your craft or field. Looking to continue learning and meeting people/networking is a big part of this. We can learn a lot through books and classes but we can also learn a lot from other people! It may be a good idea to reach out to people and ask questions just about your different fields of interest, or what they specifically do in their field(s), etc. Through that process you may meet people who you can look up to as a mentor and someone you could ask questions to. Think about what your definition of "professional" is.
