I want to be a business woman, especially with the fashion industry because I love Fashion… What can be my major in college?

Hi… I love Fashion and would like to learn many things about the fashion industry, in order to have an opportunity to create something mine and so get into business… I've always had little ideas in getting money on my own, crazy things such as selling african little sweet food at school for students, or organizing car wash events for earning money and sending some to charity… or creating a clothing line on internet and selling clothes that I would buy from thrift shops and change as I would like them to be…
But now that Im about to start college, I really dont know how organize myself, choose the right courses and obtain to get a main degree that would make me still have opportunities in case things dont go as expected…
Plus… Im a Nigerian girl born Italy and going to live in London this year… So I dont know much about the British school system… could you please help? things dont go as expected…

Hi Nelly,
I started out in the fashion industry before making the jump into hi-tech marketing and miss it sorely. The best bang for your buck (and this is from someone who went to an ivy league school) is to attend a focused fashion college. I'm not sure of the options in the UK., but here in the US the top fashion colleges are FIDM http://fidm.edu (the one I went to), FIT in NYC http://www.fitnyc.edu/ , and Parsons School of Fashion also in NYC http://www.newschool.edu/parsons/about/ . They will have the focused courses on how to not only design your product, but learn how to take it to market, manufacturing processes and understanding the wholesale/retail channels. Not many "main stream" universities are going to have those classes.

If there are not many options like that in the UK, then I would also suggest looking up "entrepreneurship" or "incubator" start up programs offered ...the one I went to in San Francisco was called "The Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center" http://rencenter.org/ and took you by the hand and led you through what you needed to do to launch a product line.

If all else fails, be aggressive and don't be afraid to get yourself in front of some designers directly (work at their retail store) and network from the inside.

Good luck.

Hi Nelly,
I would suggest you focus your major on Fashion, if that's the area you want to be in business for. You could take classes in business in addition to getting your degree in Fashion. That will help you get a fundamental understanding of business. To be a good business person, you have to really know your field (fashion) and be really good at it. I don't know UK schools being from the USA but here you can "minor" in a study. So you could major in Fashion and minor in business.

Best of luck!

Hi,
Honestly, I do not know anything about London colleges but I did a quick search for you online and found this link:
http://www.londoncolleges.com/

Hope this helps...I would suggest doing some research into the colleges that interest you and think about majoring in fashion (if offered as a degree/course of study). Business Administration/Management and Marketing will also be good choices for majors...you can take elective courses of your choice in the fashion area.
Good luck! :)
