You need to have a Bachelors degree. The MCAT has Biology, Chemistry and Physics questions on it so you will need to take those classes in college. There are many more things you can do to increase your chance of getting in this is the minimum.

Suzanne’s Answer

To become a physician you first go to college and then go to medical school. Each of these is typically 4 years. At college you can major in anything which interests you but you must also take and do well in the "pre-medical" required courses. The usual pre-med courses include at least a year of biology with labs, general chemistry with labs, organic chemistry with labs, physics, math thru calculus and often statistics. Many also expect you to have some background in psychology and social sciences,. You can look on the websites of whatever medical schools you are considering to see their exact expectations. In college be sure to connect with the pre-health/pre-med advisors who will guide you through how to prepare to take the MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test, how to gain clinical exposure through jobs, volunteer work and/or "shadowing" of physicians.

To become a "medic" (if that is what you are asking), you first become an EMT (emergency medical technician) and then do further training to become a paramedic. This is often done through a community college. EMT's employers (such as fire departments) may pay for the paramedic training.

You can get started on a healthcare career while still in high school by getting certified in CPR, AED use, and/or first aid. You can see if you could get a summer job or volunteer position in a health care setting. You can get certified as a CNA (certified nurses aid), though here in Michigan most places will not hire you until you turn 18.

Suzanne recommends the following next steps:

Talk with your high school guidance counselor about your interests and possible career goals. Be sure you are taking classes which will prepare you for entering college.
Try to take as much science and math as you can. If you need extra help, speak up and ask for it.
Don't let anyone try to talk you out of what you think you'd like to do. Come back here to this website with further questions.
