So what you can do depends on the skills you have and what you are willing to go.
I would say try and find a role that's related to what you are studying to get that practical related experience.
That being said, its still fine to look for roles that you are passionate about, and if possible still take any wage paying role.
In my case, I did a lot of different roles while at school, school cafeteria server, assistant chef, nurse for eldery, non profit organizing, social media manager and I still found a lot of those relevant to what I ended up doing after school (software engineering role).
So the short answer is see if you can find work you want/related to your career interests, and if you cant find any, take what you can find.
And if you cant find a paying role, consider building your network, take on a non paid internship, or a volunteering role.
Best of luck!

Hi Brill, great question. While I was a student I had a myriad of jobs to earn money before I graduated. I agree with Timothy that if at all possible to find a job that aligns with your professional interests, of course go that route but do not stress if you can't find something. While a student years ago I DJ'd events, delivered food, worked in a book store, waited tables, you name it. The most important part of having a job while being a student is making sure there is a work-life balance that allows you to focus on school work and your areas of study. Wishing you all the best.
